Calaveras County
Bus Trip
Sunday, November 20 2011

Our annual bus trip on 20 November, 2011 explored Calaveras wines. We have changed from our usual destinations of Napa and Sonoma valleys. Why? Price vs. Quality.

This foothill area has figured out how to grow and vinify grapes from hillside vineyards resulting in wines of some finesse and balance. They avoid the over-blown styles of hotter, rich soiled valleys.

This is a newer region that lacks the prestige of Napa. Until the rest of the wine drinking world catches on, the prices won't be pushing $100/bottle.

We visited three wineries. At Twisted Oak Winery we saw an example of gravity flow wine production.   Next at Brice Station (where the stage would change horses) we got a glimpse of the unique problems of growing and producing wines from California's highest vineyards and  tasted the attributes that elevation brings.  Lastly at Metate Hill Winery we tasted Spanish varietals in California conditions (hot, dry and with rock soil).

Great day, beautiful weather, wonderful wines!
